FAQs
What is the Yale-NUS Club?
The Yale-NUS Club is our community’s collective effort to organise ourselves and our legacy to continue post-2025. We are registered in Singapore as a society under the Registry of Societies, completely autonomous of any institution. Registering as a society allows us to perform administrative functions, such as maintaining a website and hosting reunions, and steward the concomitant designations, such as a bank account and UEN.
Beyond being a legal entity, the Club allows us to reimagine our identity as an alumni community. As a community of pioneers, this is our rebirth – a way to stay connected and continue being a community of learning, friends, and more.
Why do I need to sign up separately? Can’t you get my contact info from Alumni Affairs/the College?
Since we are an autonomous club, we cannot get access to your data from Yale-NUS College’s Alumni Affairs or any other department. Under Singapore’s data protection policy – the Personal Data Protection Act – we will need you to share your data with us through by signing up as a member.
Who can join the Club?
According to our constitution, written and ratified through the Yale-NUS Alumni Taskforce, membership to the Club is open to:
- All graduands of Yale-NUS College
- Any student who matriculated and studied at the College for at least one semester
- Former and current staff and faculty, including visiting faculty who taught for at least one semester
- Exchange students who spent at least one semester at the College
- Individuals who have rendered exceptional service/support to our community
Please note that you must sign-up to be considered for membership in the Club as outlined in our constitution.
How do I join the Club? Are there any membership dues or fees?
You can join the club by signing up as a member through this form if you meet the membership criteria stated in our constitution (as outlined above). Based on your qualification criteria, you may qualify for a regular membership or may require further approval. Please refer to the constitution for more information regarding this. At present, we are not introducing any membership dues or fees for our members.
What are the benefits of joining the Club?
The aim of the Club is to help the Yale-NUS community stay connected and continue on our legacy beyond 2025. As a member, you will be kept up to date on any Club events, including the annual reunion. Most importantly, by joining the Club, you get to help us shape the future of our community and the Club. What kind of events should we organise? What kinds of activities should we engage in? What are the values that (continues to) set members of the Yale-NUS community apart? You get to build new traditions and bring in the old. We need and value your input. So, come join us!
Where does the Club get its funding? How does the Club spend its funding?
At present, we have a small endowment that is managed by NUSC and some in-kind donations. This fund allows us to maintain administrative functions such as maintaining a website and other basic IT needs, and host some regular alumni events.
How can I participate in Club activities if I am not in Singapore?
Where possible, the Club will try to host events online or in-hybrid mode. One good example would be the upcoming Annual General Meeting for the Club. We plan to release the agenda for discussion (4 weeks) and voting (2 weeks) ahead of time to ensure all members have enough time to participate no matter where they are in the world. Beyond this, we also look forward to alumni-led events being organised in other major alumni hubs around the world. If you have any further thoughts/ideas on how we can ensure cross-globe inclusivity for our alumni community, please connect with us!
What is the Club’s calendar of events and programmes like?
Presently, we only have a lean calendar of events consisting of an annual reunion in May. Some other ideas for events include: bimonthly common rooms with rotating discussion topics, alumni-to-alumni mentorship programmes, virtual presentation parties, etc. However, we are a very small and voluntary-run executive committee. So, we would like to invite you to share your ideas and participation on what kinds of events we can host regularly.
What is the difference between regular, associate, and honorary alumni? Why do we need all these tiers?
- Regular alumni are Yale-NUS graduates and students who matriculated but left the College in good standing.
- Associate alumni are former member of staff and faculty (including visiting faculty who taught at the College for one semester), and exchange/visiting students who spent at least one semester at the College.
- Honorary alumni are who have rendered meritorious service or notable support to the Yale-NUS community, who have been approved for membership at a general meeting.
Traditionally, alumni clubs only include graduands. Some alumni groups may open their doors to matriculants and international affiliates (e.g., Yale Alumni Association). But in line with the inclusive spirit of Yale-NUS, we want to include all the people who made Yale-NUS possible in our community. However, in line with the traditional alumni clubs, only regular members – i.e., Yale-NUS graduates, and students who matriculated but left the College in good standing – will have voting rights during the annual general meeting.
After deliberation on what this would look like, our community at-large came to this structure through the Alumni Taskforce (2022-2023) as encoded in the Club’s constitution. Please read through the documentation of Alumni Taskforce meetings to further understand the rationale behind this structure.
Remind me, why are we setting up this Club again?
We want to create a space for the Yale-NUS community to coalesce post-2025. The Club offers a pathway for our community to reimagine and regain control over the future of our community and fulfil our mission:
To strengthen the bonds of the Yale-NUS community, to enrich their lives by fostering meaningful connections amongst them, to embody the values promoted by Yale-NUS, to encourage them to use their talents for positive impact in the local community and to elevate awareness of a liberal arts education around the world.
What will you do with my data?
Any data you share with us will be stored and accessed as per the standards set by Singapore’s data protection policies (the PDPA). For our Club, the Data Protection Officer (DPO) is the elected President. Any other member of the Executive Committee will only use data extracted by the DPO for specific purposes that you have given your consent – primarily, to contact you. We will not use your data for any other purpose without obtaining your explicit consent. In case you choose to leave the Club for any reason, we will delete your data upon request.
Isn’t all this data protection unnecessary red-tape? Why should we follow it?
We want to ensure the best privacy protection to our members as possible. Not everyone will be comfortable with having their data publicly shared and accessed. Hence, we believe that following data protection policies serves our community and ensures that it remains a safe space for all our members. Of course, as a legal entity registered in Singapore, we are also obligated to operate under its laws.
I signed up but I have not received any email confirming my membership. When will I receive the confirmation after I sign up? Why the delay?
Thanks for signing up to become an official member of the Yale-NUS Club. We are working to verify your membership and will reach out to you as soon as we can. We appreciate your patience!
